Why this project?

This programme is designed to eliminate non-tariff barriers (NTBs) and other trade barriers in Tanzania by improving NTB identification, registration, monitoring, reporting and elimination by the private sector and government institutions. The programme will also increase awareness on the effect of NTBs and enhance prioritisation of resources used in NTB elimination.

What:

Considering the challenges mentioned and lessons learnt from the previous intervention in Strategy I, an extended project was designed to support elimination of NTBs specially looking into NTBs governance support and subsequently, elimination of core NTBs.

Key outputs include:

  • Improved efficiency and effectiveness in reporting and monitoring of NTBs
  • Improved knowledge in using the EAC SMS system
  • Improved enforcement of NTBs elimination
  • Enhanced private sector advocacy for prioritized sector specific NTBs
  • Improved Public and Private Dialogue and coordination in the elimination of NTBs
  • Improved public and private sector knowledge on the NTBs Act

How:

The project implementation is designed in two pillars: Pillar 1 supports the overall NTBs Governance; where the project supports the process to identify and monitor NTBs; and Pillar 2 supports elimination of priority/core NTBs; where the project provides a more focused assistance for removal of priority/core NTBs linked to specific trade development programmes.
