KRA to fine rogue importers

The Kenya Revenue Authority has said it will fine importers of excisable goods – other than motor vehicles – up to Sh1.5 million if unregistered with it by January 31.

Such importers would also be risking a jail term of up to three years, and the goods in question will be forfeited, KRA said in a statement.

The taxman said importers are supposed to register under the Commissioner of Domestic Taxes, and has availed a list of excisable goods. Excise tax is charged at 10 per cent of the value.
