LOCATION

Moyale is a border town between Kenya and Ethiopia. Its is situated approximately 780KM North of Nairobi and 775KM South of Addis Ababa.

WHY?

Moyale is part of the Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSET)[1] and an important border crossing joining the regions largest economies of Kenya and Ethiopia. Kenya’s exports to Ethiopia in 2019 were valued at Ksh 6.70 billion[2], while Ethiopia’s exports to Kenya were valued at US$ 52.05 million[3]. With the modernisation of the 500 KM Isiolo-Moyale road and completion of 300KM section of the 775KM Moyale-Addis Ababa road, trade between the two neighbouring nations is expected to exponentially grow.

IMPLEMENTING PARTNER

The implementing partners for the integrated border management component is Ethiopia Customs Commission, Kenya Revenue Authority and Border Management Secretariat, jointly with the other Government of Kenya and Government of Ethiopia border regulatory agencies, and TMA. Construction component was implemented by Kenya National Highways Authority and Ethiopia Roads Authority, jointly with the other Government of Kenya and Government of Ethiopia border regulatory agencies, African Development Bank.

RESULTS

Construction of the One Stop Border Point (OSBP) was completed in 2018 and officially launched on 9th December 2020. Commencement of OSBP operations is scheduled in Q3 of the FY 2020/21. At least 30% reduction in border crossing time is expected for cargo traffic in both directions, and at least 70% level of user satisfaction.

According to baseline survey (2017) it takes on average, 21 hrs and 52 minutes (Kenya-Ethiopia) and 12.5 hrs (Ethiopia-Kenya) for a cargo truck to cross the border.
