LOCATION

Mirama Hills is located in Ntungamo District, Ankole sub-region. The town is at Uganda’s border with Rwanda and lies very close to where the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania intersect. It is approximately 350 kilometres (220 mi), by road, southwest of Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city. This is approximately 30 kilometres (19 mi), by road, southeast of Ntungamo, the administrative center and the largest town in the district.

WHY

The Mirama Hills road route offers a shorter and less difficult route to Rwanda than passing through the Katuna/Gatuna border post. WHY

Kagitumba OSBP is one of the projects under improved Physical Market Access established with aim of contributing to reducing the time to transport goods between Uganda and Rwanda, and therefore also contribute to reducing trade costs in Africa. Kagitumba OSBP connects to Ntungamo road through Mirama Hills OSBP. The route through this OSBP is considered to offer a shorter and less difficulty to/from Rwanda than passing through the Katuna/Gatuna border post. “It is anticipated that up to 60% of the heavy commercials vehicles (trucks) and passengers cars especially buses will divert to Kagitumba/ Mirama Hills Border Post once the construction of OSBP at Kagitumba/Mirama Hills and Ntungamo-Mirama Hills Road is completed” DFID feasibility study on Kagitumba/Mirama hills 2009. Operationalisation of a One Stop Border Post concept at Kagitumba and Mirama Hills started end December 2015. The pilot Time and Traffic study, within three months of operationalisation showed a reduction in clearance time of 25%. The end of Project Time and Traffic survey planned to take place in October is expected to see a reduction in clearance time by 30%. Current statistics vehicle traffic statistics (Comparing 2015 before operationalisation and 2016-August 2017), show that there been consistent increase in traffic numbers by 12% from 2015 to 2016.
