USAID-ERRA funded the translation of the EAC Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) Application (App) into EAC official languages: French and Swahili. This feature enables users, mostly traders, to interact with the app in languages they understand, facilitating the reporting, monitoring, and resolution of NTBs that impact their cross-border trading activities.
On December 08, 2023, TradeMark Africa (TMA), in partnership with the EAC Secretariat, officially launched the App in Bujumbura, Burundi. This App seamlessly integrates SMS, email, and phone reporting methods, providing economic operators with a one-stop solution for effectively reporting NTBs to trade. By simplifying the NTB reporting process, the App will enable traders and producers to tackle obstacles hindering their trade efficiency and competitiveness. Moreover, it ensures transparency and quick issue resolution by engaging technical and policy-level mechanisms, such as National Focal Points, the National Monitoring Committees (NMCs), and the Regional Monitoring Committee (RMC).
NTBs pose a significant problem for traders and producers, as they can reduce profits and limit market access. These barriers include discriminatory requirements for special licenses and permits, excessive paperwork, complex customs procedures, and border bureaucratic delays.
The App is available for download on the Apple Store and Google’s Play Store.
