TMA facilitated a Standards and Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) strategy workshop in Nairobi to develop a road map of key priorities to support safe and seamless agriculture trade across the East African Community. This workstream contributes to ERRA’s aim of increasing the capacity of national and regional institutions to regulate and provide services to facilitate food trade. Over three days from February 28 to March 02, key government and private sector stakeholders had the opportunity to deliberate on the following areas:
- Identify Standards and SPS issues affecting crop and animal value chain trade flows.
- Design sector-based interventions to address the challenges arising.
- Develop work plans for standards, SPS activities, and implementation arrangements under ERRA.
The workshop brought together over 70 diverse participants from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, and South Sudan and representation from the EAC Secretariat, Ministries of Agriculture from member states, National Standards Bodies, Private Sector Agriculture Associations, Regional Bodies, and USAID and US
Department of Agriculture.
