Lake Kivu Transport

The TMA commissioned a feasibility study for the programme in 2017 which assessed the project as being both economically and financially viable. Water transport in Rwanda is currently unexploited and TMA support will help the Government to attract investment into this mode of transport which has been found to be both cheaper and safer than road transport. TMA will support the Government of Rwanda to construct basic harbour facilities in two port towns of Rubavu and Rusizi and attract private sector investors to operate ferry services on the lake while the Government of Rwanda will secure funds internally to fund the development of Karongi and Nkora ports. The choice of these locations is based on TMA commissioned a feasibility study of 2017 which includes a comprehensive traffic survey and analysis of project benefits where transport benefits are expected to reach and $ 20.4 million as annual savings and 17.7 as a result of avoided fatalities. Nimule OSBP Construction

The border is extremely slow, and Nimule takes an average of four days to process imports. This delay imposes serious costs on traders. These time delays can be attributed to inadequate border infrastructure, insufficient quality and quantity of technical equipment, poor border design, complicated procedures based on centralized control, and multiple border organisations working in isolation. What: TradeMark Africa is financing an OSBP at Elegu, Uganda, and modernising and extending the facilities at Nimule, South Sudan. How: TMA will provide full funding for the construction of the OSBP. Kasenyi Port Infrastructure Upgrade

The Lake Albert providing access over water for trade to the city of Bunia and the hinterland until Kisangani. The project aims to rehabilitate the infrastructure at the Port.  The jetty will be renovated with the first 112 meters requiring a small amount of refurbishment but generally considered to be sound. The top surface of this 112 meters will be paved with reinforced concrete. The old fixed crane structure and rails crane will be dismantled and removed from the site. The Port is threatened by sedimentation at the port entrance. The sand bank has raised to the point where vessels accessing the port run a high risk of grounding. This also means that larger ships cannot access the port. The removal of the sand bank through dredging at the port is therefore necessary for its continued ability to service larger vessels. Port Reitz road

The project, which is scheduled to be completed in August 2016 is expected to greatly improve the capacity and efficiency of the Port by bringing on board an extra 19,940 passenger car units (CPU) capacity by 2018 being an increase from the 2,874 CPU recorded in 2014. To support access to the Kipevu West container terminal, The Government of Kenya is currently undertaking the construction of the Mombasa Southern By pass project which is expected to be completed by 2018. In the period preceding the completion of the by-pass, the Port Reitz Road will be crucial to the Kipevu West Container Terminal as it will be the only access to the new container terminal. A traffic survey undertaken by the Kenya National Highways Agency (KeNHA) in January 2014 demonstrates that the present infrastructure in the Port Reitz area will be inadequate to meet the increased traffic demand. The survey recommends urgent expansion of the Port Reitz road into a dual carriageway. Ntungamo – Mirama Hills Road Construction

This unpaved section of 37 Km of Northern Corridor road network was a major constraint to the better operationalisation of a one stop border post at Kagitumba and Mirama Hills is expected to decrease the time for goods to be transported between Kampala and Kigali and increase the volume of traffic using this route. What: The project focuses on upgrading and paving of the road to bitumen standards from Ntungamo to Mirama Hills Border (approx 37 Km long). The works consist of upgrading the road from gravel to Class II Bitumen Standard, with 7m-wide carriageway of asphalt concrete surfacing and 2No. 1.5m-wide double surface dressed shoulders. How: TMA is providing financial assistance to the Government of Uganda (GoU) to assist in the financing of the project. The Works will be executed by a Construction firm and Quality Assurance will be ensured through permanent supervision of works backed up by Project Managers from UNRA and TMA. Taveta border post serves traffic to and from Northern Tanzania and the sea port of Mombasa. With the current traffic volume crossing Taveta /Holili border posts and the anticipated significant increase in traffic volume once the Voi-Taveta part of the road is upgraded, efficient movement of goods and people through the two border posts is very critical to facilitate trade within the EAC region. The increase is likely because the distance by road from Mombasa port to Himo junction in Tanzania is much shorter (about 472 kilometres) compared to the distance from Dar es Salaam port to the Himo junction (about 935 kilometres).
