That study, now complete, assessed the impact of port operations on factors such as greenhouse gas emissions, air, water and soil quality, noise and sound by vessels, smoke emitted by ships, waste management, oil spill, marine pollution, energy consumption and utilization, natural resources, wildlife and marine conservation as well as impact on local communities. The output of this exercise informed KPA and other stakeholders in developing a Green Port Policy and an associated implementation plan to support the transformation of the port into a modern and competitive regional hub. This high growth has put a strain on existing port infrastructure, necessitating costly investments to improve operations and service delivery. Despite the efforts by Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to expand capacity and improve efficiency in cargo handling, the port still faces capacity constraints and service delivery challenges. These include low labour productivity, poor cargo off take by rail and road, cargo clearance delays, lack of full automation, operational wastages and poor resource utilization. These are compounded by changing ship technology; poor urban planning around the port; a changing legal and policy environment; corruption occurring along the Northern Corridor. What: TMA and KPA have agreed on a programme of activities to provide KPA with additional capacity to handle increasing demand which include: Legal and Regulatory Revision; Port-wide Productivity Improvement; Infrastructure and Facilities Improvement; Preliminary analysis of the Mombasa Dry Port Initiative; Supporting KPA’s communications with all key stakeholders, decision-makers and communities; Mitigation and adaptation to climate impacts at the Port. Lake Kivu Transport

The TMA commissioned a feasibility study for the programme in 2017 which assessed the project as being both economically and financially viable. Water transport in Rwanda is currently unexploited and TMA support will help the Government to attract investment into this mode of transport which has been found to be both cheaper and safer than road transport. TMA will support the Government of Rwanda to construct basic harbour facilities in two port towns of Rubavu and Rusizi and attract private sector investors to operate ferry services on the lake while the Government of Rwanda will secure funds internally to fund the development of Karongi and Nkora ports. The choice of these locations is based on TMA commissioned a feasibility study of 2017 which includes a comprehensive traffic survey and analysis of project benefits where transport benefits are expected to reach and $ 20.4 million as annual savings and 17.7 as a result of avoided fatalities. Kasenyi Port Infrastructure Upgrade

The top surface of this 112 meters will be paved with reinforced concrete. The old fixed crane structure and rails crane will be dismantled and removed from the site.
