This route is considerably longer than the Taveta/Holili route. Operationalising the Taveta/Holili border is expected to increase with the construction of a new Voi-Arusha road passing through the two border points, stretching the capacity of the current infrastructure and operations and increase waiting time for import and export processing. Increased delays create costs for traders. This book brings together a collection of papers that look at the nature and impact of barriers to trade within Africa. The varied contributions draw attention to a wide range of constraints, distortions and abuses, and unveil the complexity of the reform agenda that is necessary to address them. The chapters have been written in a non-technical language, with the explicit intention of promoting dialogue about integration amongst policy makers, regulators, entrepreneurs, consumers, academia, and the broad international development community. Behind each chapter lie more detailed technical reports that are available on the trade website of the World Bank’s Africa Region.

Among these challenges has been the low access to Good Agriculture Practice information, in part as a result of the existing standards being presented in a foreign language (English), thereby locking out a large percentage of the regions small scale farmers. What: This project is therefore aimed at developing a localized version of GlobalGAP (Good Agric. Practices) called East Africa GAP (EAGAP) that is available in Swahili. Developing auditors and trainers on EAGAP and supporting groups of farmers producing fresh produce in each of the East African countries to become certified in EAGAP. Certification will increase the selling price earned by smallholder farmers. How: TMA is providing funding to Fresh produce Exporters Association of Kenya (FPEAK) to facilitate domestication of good agricultural practices by horticulture farmers in East Africa. This project will be coordinated by FPEAK, but implemented in respective countries through established horticulture associations/organizations.
